Education Bridge

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Education Bridge is a US-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that builds and operates schools in South Sudan.[1] As an organization, Education Bridge’s mission is to develop flourishing South Sudanese communities through holistic education and peacebuilding.[2] This mission is reflected in their two primary goals of providing quality secondary education by building schools, and to develop their students’ peace-building skills.[3]

History/Background[edit]

Education Bridge was founded by Ngor Majak Anyieth.[4] In 2011, South Sudan gained independence from Sudan after two decades of civil war that destroyed many schools in the country and consequently depriving many children of an education. In a press release by UNICEF.[5] 12 January 2016, it was reported that 51% of South Sudanese primary and lower secondary school-age children do not attend school. As a result of poor access to education, as cited from UNESCO[6] South Sudanese people over the age of fifteen only have a literacy rate of only 26.83%, further perpetuating ethnic violence and poverty in the country.

This figure corresponds to the highest proportion of children in a country not attending school in the entire world. Hence, in 2005, Ngor Majak Anyieth[7] left his home for Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya in order to receive primary and secondary school education.[8] Then, he attended the African Leadership Academy in South Africa and the University of Notre Dame in the United States. As a result of experiencing the lack of education first hand, Ngor Majak Anyieth recognized the power of education and the opportunities that South Sudanese youth are deprived of without access to proper schooling. He created Education Bridge because he wanted to make education in South Sudan more accessible to properly educate the youth.

Operations[edit]

Education Bridge builds and operates schools in South Sudan in order to provide quality secondary education as well as promote peacebuilding skills among youth. Their first school, Greenbelt Academy[9], is located in Bor, Jonglei State. The school currently serves 400 students from Grades 9-12.
