Eirewave is a digital radio station that plays British and Irish pop rock music from its studios in Belfast. It was launched by Olivier Mauxion, a former national rock radio station presenter in France, who is a pop rock enthusiast and a global radio program consultant with over 25 years of experience. The station aims to offer a unique and ad-free format, providing an alternative to the mainstream offerings of radio. Eirewave delivers music to its listeners by both broadcast and the internet, with the two technologies complementing each other. Eirewave's founder, Olivier Mauxion, was inspired to start the station after attending U2's ZOO TV Tour in Paris in 1992, which introduced him to the joys of British and Irish pop rock music.[1]

Background and Inspiration[edit]

Olivier Mauxion, the founder of Eirewave, attended a U2 concert in Paris in 1992, which inspired him to explore the British and Irish pop rock music scene. He subsequently attended concerts by other popular bands and performers, including Genesis and Rory Gallagher, in the same year. These concerts were seminal moments for him, and he became a pop rock enthusiast. Olivier moved to Ireland in 2010 and immersed himself in the vibrant culture that had produced some of his favourite musicians. After struggling to find a service that streamed his favourite tunes in a format that would work for him and millions of other fans around the globe, Olivier created Eirewave with the help of his friends, radio consultants, sound engineers, and imaging producers from across the world.[2]

Unique Features[edit]

Eirewave is an ad-free station, providing a unique and enjoyable listening experience to its listeners. The traditional economic model for radio that broadcasts 15 minutes of adverts per hour has become outdated and unattractive in light of advert-free platforms. Eirewave has new ideas to monetize radio in ways that do not jeopardize the listening experience. Eirewave's main target market is very socially active and attends a lot of musical gigs, concerts, and events. Eirewave keeps them constantly up-to-date on contemporary pop-rock music developments and events both on the airwaves and online. The station aims to have a visible impact on the British music business industry by introducing new British & Irish artists, highlighting existing artists, and promoting both to its listeners.[3] In March 2023, the station has launched a new digital campaign aiming to engage its audience and attract new listeners to its platform.[4][5]

Broadcasting[edit]

Eirewave has expanded its reach to Glasgow through a new small-scale DAB multiplex launched by the Like Media Group. The multiplex is currently operating under the Like DAB name and carries an initial 18 services, including Eirewave. Nation Broadcasting closed down the Trial Glasgow multiplex last year after winning the full-time licence, but sold it to the Like Media Group before it was launched. The multiplex is currently using one transmission site at Dundasvale Court, with the second site at Cathcart going online shortly. The Managing Director of Like DAB, Ryan Davies, expressed delight in launching the new multiplex and noted the challenges faced during the small-scale DAB trials in Glasgow.[6][7]
