Eleanor Barbara Shiffner
1896-1982
Eleanor Barbara Georgina Shiffner was born on 8 March 1896 in Doncaster Yorkshire. The Daughter of George Bridger Shiffner and the niece of Sir John Shiffner 5th Baronet 1657 - 1914. Educated at The Royal Academy where she was a Landseer Scholar, winning both Bronze and Silver medals. She was particularly known for her natural ability of depicting horses. Many of her paintings after the second world war were commissioned by the Greenall Whitley Brewery (Warrington), where her Brother, Edward Shiffner was head brewer. Many of the Brewery's estate pubs had Barbaras' paintings on their pub signs.Her latter years were spent in Sussex, although she died in a care home in Suffolk in 1982. Her art work regularly appears on auction sites, and a large amount of her work is in a private collection owned by her great nephew Sir Michael George Shiffner Bt.
