Elitsa Storey is a 33-year-old Bulgarian woman. She was born in Bulgaria in 1987. She was born with a shorter left leg; no ankle or knee, as well as missing fingers on one hand. Her parents at the time were 20 years old and put her up for adoption after being informed by the doctor that Elitsa’s chances of living were low. There were two care homes that Elitsa stayed in until she was adopted into an American family at the age of five. After many surgeries, they eventually amputated her left leg, leaving her with a prosthetic one.[1] Elista was the first handicapped child to be adopted out of Bulgaria. [2]

Skiing Career[edit]

Elista started out her skiing career with her adoptive family at with the Sun Valley Ski Team.[2] Elitsa participated in the Paralympics on the US alpine skiing team twice; once in 2006 where she became an Olympian at the age of 18, and then again in 2010. She eventually became married to Adam Hall, a double Paralympic gold medalist. Adam is still professionally skiing [1]

Later Life[edit]

In 2018, while pregnant, she traveled to Bulgaria and reunited with her biological father, half brother, and grandmother who thought she was dead.[1]

"I am still getting to know them... I am still trying to understand who they are. I am still trying to understand who I am. It will take time," she said.”[1]

“Her memories of the institutions are dim, but both she and her adoptive family say she was well cared for and suffered no mistreatment.”[1]
