Ellen Mary Gunning (nee Whelan, born 29 September 1957) is an Irish entrepreneur and author. She is the founding director of the Irish Academy of Public Relations, a global communications training organisation. She is best known as the author of 'Public Relations a practical approach' (2003, 2007, 2018).

Early and Personal life Gunning was born in Dublin on 29 September 1957. She is the eldest of four children (two girls and two boys). Her father Michael Whelan worked in the Irish Glass Bottle Company and her mother ran their home. Ellen attended St. Mary's School in Haddington Road and later studied public relations with PRII and was named 'Student of the Year' in the first, ever, graduate class. She later took an MA in Communications and Cultural Studies at Dublin City University. She lives in Wicklow with her husband, the award-wining artist Tony Gunning.

Business Career In 1985, Gunning formed the PR Consultancy Elton Communications, and created the Irish Academy of Public Relations in 1991.
