Emanuela Lombardo (born December 2, 1971 in Vicenza) is an Italian political scientist specialised in Gender Equality policies (European Union, Spain), Europeanisation, and feminist approaches to political analysis. She is professor in the Department of Political Science and Administration of Complutense University of Madrid.[1]

Education[edit]

After she graduated in Political Philosophy at the University of Florence in 1998, she attended the University of Reading in the UK, where she obtained her Ph.D. in Political Science in 2002. During her time in Reading, from 1998 to 2002, she was a researcher for the European Citizenship project “EURCIT” and she wrote her thesis on "The Europeanisation of Spanish Gender Policy: A Feminist Analysis". For her research, she received a scholarship from the Economic and Social Research Council.[2]

Career[edit]

Between 2002 and 2004, Lombardo conducted a post-doctoral research about EU citizenship and democratic legitimacy in the European CIDEL Project at the University of Zaragoza, through a post-doctoral research grant of the Spanish Ministry of Education, and researched on gender equality policies through a European Commission grant. In 2006 she signed a post-doctoral research contract at Radboud University Nijmegen to work with Mieke Verloo on gender equality policies in Europe. From 2006 to 2011 she was a Ramón y Cajal post-doctoral researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid with a contract funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education.

Since 2003, Lombardo has participated in several European and Spanish research projects such as the MAGEEQ project on "Mainstreaming Gender Equality in Europe" and the QUING project on "Quality in Gender + Equality Policies". She has also been a main investigator in the European TARGET (Transnational Applied Research in Gender Equity Training) project and the project "Políticas de igualdad en la Universidad española UNIGUAL" funded by the Spanish Ministry of Research. She has been a visiting professor at the University of Antwerp, the University of Helsinki, the University of Aalborg, and the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.

She has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the European Journal of Political Research, Journal of Comparative Policy Analysis, Comparative European Politics, Politics, Gender, Work and Organization, Social Politics, Feminist Review, PS: Political Science and Politics, Citizenship Studies, Feminist Theory, European Political Science, European Journal of Women's StudiesInternational Feminist Journal of Politics, European Integration Online Papers, Women Studies International Forum, Political science, Politics and Governance, Journal of Women, Politics and Policy, Política y Gobierno.

Lombardo is an active member of the ECPR Standing group on Gender and Politics and has participated in the coordinating teams of different ECPG conferences on Politics and Gender. She is the director of the research group "Género y Política" at the Complutense University of Madrid and member of some editorial boards of journals and book series such as Routledge Gender and Comparative Politics: Journal of Women, Politics and Policy; European Journal of Politics & Gender; Revista de Investigaciones Feministas.

She has also worked as an analyst for institutions such as the European Parliament Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and other equality institutions. She is an elected member of the board of the Spanish Political Science Association AECPA (Asociación Española de Ciencia Política).

Awards[edit]

Lombardo received a prize for the book La europeización de la política española de la igualdad de género (Tirant lo blanc 2004) by the Seminario interdisciplinar de estudios de la mujer of the Zaragoza University and the recognition of "outstanding research career" by the Spanish national agency of evaluation of academic excellence (ANEP 2010).[3]
