Emsland Stärke GmbH[edit]

Emsland-Stärke GmbH, the main company in the Emsland Group, has Europe’s largest potato processing starch factory. It is located in Emlichheim, which sits in the County of Bentheim. The company has an export rate of 85%[2] and is the world market leader in the production of refined starch products, potato protein, flakes and granules[3]

In 1928, the  cornerstone was laid for the Emlichheimer Kartoffelfabrik AG, which later became Emsland-Stärke GmbH. As a raw material, the potato still serves as the basis for the products in which it is an ingredient; examples include refined starch products and potato protein. These are used as preliminary products for the food processing industry in processes such as the production of potato chips, flour, bread, baked goods, candy, French fries, detergents, etc. Peas are also processed to produce pea starch and byproducts such as pea proteins and pea isolates.

At the main plant in Emlichheim and at the starch factories in Wietzendorf, Golßen and Kyritz[4]., about 1.8 million tons of potatoes are processed annually into potato starch. Potato flakes and potato granules are produced in the plants in Cloppenburg, Hagenow, and Wittingen, and used as raw materials for ready-made meals and snacks. In addition, the Emsland Group includes six (minority) shareholdings in Great Britain, Italy, Turkey, the U.S., etc. which are not (fully) consolidated.
