Engaito is a 10-minute Ugandan comedy short film directed by Talemwa and Isiko Abubaker. and produced by Masembe Daisy. The film premiered on Showmax on the 25th of May, 2021 under the "Colors of Africa" theme.[1] It follows an uptown kid who joins a local school in a very deep village where shoes are considered as a bad omen.[2] It stars Sekajja Maurice, Nampuma Henry, Akello Esther and Zzizinga Dickson in a supporting role. Engaito was nominated in several awards which included the Uganda Film Festival Awards (UFF), the Kalasha International TV and Film Awards and the Janzi Awards respectively but it never won any.

Plot[edit]

The film starts with Musana (Sekajja Maurice) and Ndizaawa (Nampuma Henry) in a congested Taxi/Matatu heading to the village. When they are dropped off, they make their way to Ndizaawa's old village house which was owned by his late father. Miraculously, the door to the house isn't locked and they make their way in. During the night Ndizaawa tries to convince his son Musana that he will like the new school very much. He also tells him that they could no longer afford the uptown school because it was becoming expensive. In a montage Ndizaawa carefully prepares Musana's School uniform and carefully polishes his sons shoes to a sparkle.

In the morning, the duo head over to the new school where Ndizaawa tells Musana to walk into any class of his choice as he will come back later to sort out everything with the schools administration. Infront of them is a poster that says "We welcome you our beloved minister" written in broken English. Musana makes his way to one of the classrooms where Teacher Gloria (Akello Esther) is teaching. When Teacher Gloria sees his shoes she ululates as she charges out of the classroom. The rest of the students follow her as well across the school compound.

Later, Musana attempts to escape when he is paraded infront of the schools administrators in the head masters office but his attempt is cut short when he is caught and tied with ropes onto a chair. When the headmaster walks in, he mistakes the boy for a demon when he sees his shoes. The headmaster tries to flee the office but composes himself when he sees no one else running out with him. He bravely asks the school administrators who carried the demon to his office but no one answers. Teacher Gloria confirms to him that she saw the kid flying around into the class like a witch with her own eyes as she was teaching. She adds that it was rather peculiar for the kid to appear on the same day they were expecting the Minister of Education to visit the school.

The headmaster orders the school administrators to tie the demon onto the tree in the school compound to show the minister when he arrives that they are the brave people who managed to catch the demon.

Later, the entire school is in a jovial mood while welcoming the minister for the first time in their local school. When the door to the ministers car opens for the minister to get out, the entire school including the headmaster and the school administrators scatter and run into different directions when they see the minister wearing shoes as well mistaking him for a second demon.

Post credits scene[edit]

In a post credits scene, the students of the entire school are finally wearing shoes of all colors and sizes with a tagline that reads "You can delay change but you can't stop it!"

Production[edit]

Pre-production[edit]

Isiko Abubaker pitched the story to Talemwa during one of their class sessions at the Multichoice Talent Factory with Abubaker saying it was inspired by the life of his older brothers though it is not indicated anywhere in the film that it's based on a true story. In late 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic, the story was pitched to Mnet Channel heads for East Africa who green lit for the "Colors of Africa" theme for the Multichoice Talent Factory to be released on South Africa's streaming service, Showmax.[3]

Talemwa and Isiko Abubaker wrote the script together with Masembe Daisy attached as the producer. Later, Nakimbowa Victoria would be attached as the production designer for the film as well as Emmanuel Gashumba as the chief lighting technician. Later, additional crew was hired which included Semujju Isma as the sound recordist, Baleke John Kalema as the property master and Isiko Shafic as the driver.

Sekajja Maurice (Musana), the main lead of the film was cast in the same time as Nampuma Henry (His father in the film) and Akello Esther as Teacher Gloria. Zzinzinga Dickson joined the cast a few days later as the head master.

Filming[edit]

Principal photography of the film began on the 18th of December, 2020 and wrapped on the 19th the following day lasting only for two days. The crew travelled to Jinja, Uganda in a small village called Buyala where the school in the film is located. The real headmaster was very generous enough to allow his students to appear as extras in the film.

The film was shot on a Black Magic URSA Mini 4K camera and the sound recorded with a Zoom F8 recorder.

Post production[edit]

The film was edited during the course of the remaining months until it's premiere on the 25th of May, 2021. A few scenes were reshot and included in the main film that made the final cut. Talemwa and Isiko Abubaker served as editors and sound designers for the film respectively. During this same time, Talemwa designed the main official poster of the film by himself.

Music[edit]

The music of the film was recorded and scored by Baguma David in the course of only one week which included some elements of afrobeat and some percussion.

Release[edit]

The film premiered on the 25th of May, 2021 on South Africa's streaming service Showmax under the "Colors of Africa" theme.

Festivals[edit]

Engaito made it's festival run in the same year of it's release where it was nominated in the Uganda Film Festival Awards (UFF), the Kalasha International TV and Film Awards (Nairobi, Kenya) and the Janzi Awards respectively.
