Ether Wars is a multiplayer worker placement, resource management, and area control board game designed by Javier Alaiz and Alvaro Arteaga and illustrated by Ulric Leprovost..[1] Presented for the first time to the public at the IX International Game Festival in Cordoba[2], it was originally launched on Kickstarter by Ether Dev in 2015[3]; however, it did not make its funding goal. In 2017, publisher Burning Games Ltd[4]. relaunched the project, raised $29,653 from 437 backers and published the game[5]

Gameplay[edit]

In Ether Wars, each player assumes the roles of one of four different intergalactic species in the fight for the precious resource Ether, on the distant planet of Etheria. Players gain points in the form of Ether crystals; the first to reach a set number of crystals, determined by the number of players, wins.

The game settles on a dice-token placement mechanic and combines it with resource management and card strategies in the form of asymmetric powers and instant spells. Each player in the game represents one of the four species (Dracon, Human, Ripper, or Vai) with their own individual background and special powers. The game board represents the planet Etheria, with the different resource areas, the citadel, and the respective players’ areas or “silos.”

The game structures in rounds called “days,” each of which is composed of seven phases;

  • During the first phase or “New Day” players reveal an event that will take place during the round.
  • After the effect takes place players get ready for the round during the “Reinforcements” phase by choosing their special ability for this round and receiving one unit and two protein.
  • Once players are ready, following the turn order they can choose to hire a special mercenary die during the “Mercenaries” phase then proceed to the “Placement” phase.
  • During this phase players deploy their units on the planet following a set of placement rules. This rules consist of; 1. Players place in a turn sequence, placing as many dice as they want but only in one area per turn. 2. Players can’t place in an area in which they have already placed in a previous turn. 3. Players can’t place in an area which already is occupied by the maximum of players specified in that area.
  • Once all the dice under the control of the players have been placed, a “movement” phase allows players to ambush or escape by paying the corresponding resource.
  • When the “movement” phase is complete, players proceed in turns to resolve the different actions and conflicts present on the board (extract, combat, buy new cards or resources and clone) returning the corresponding dice to their bases and obtaining resources in the “Resolution” phase.
  • After every player action has been resolved, players have to pay the cost to maintain their army represented in “protein” in the “Maintenance” phase and the round is over.

The game progresses in consecutive rounds until one of the players achieves the required number of ether crystals and wins the game.[1][4][6]
