Eva Meijer is a Dutch writer, philosopher, artist and singer-songwriter

Biography and work[edit]

Meijer studied interdisciplinary art at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, and philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. In 2017, she defended her PhD-thesis on political animal voices cum laude,[1] for which she won the Erasmianum Dissertatieprize.[2] Her PhD-thesis was published as When Animals Speak. Toward an Interspecies Democracy by New York University Press and won the ASCA Book Award in 2020.[3]

Meijer wrote eleven books, fiction and non-fiction, that have been translated into 18 languages. She won the Halewijnprize in 2017 for all her books, and in the same year she won the Hypatiaprize for De soldaat was een dolfijn. Her novel Bird Cottage was published by Pushkin Press in 2019.[4] Animal Languages, a book about nonhuman animals and language, was published by John Murray in 2020.[5] [6] Pushkin Press published The limits of my language, an essay about depression, in 2021.[1]

Meijer currently works as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Amsterdam, supported by a VENI-grant from the NWO (Dutch Science Council), on the research project The politics of (not) eating animals.[7] Her academic publications focus on language and social justice, with a special interest for the nonhuman animals.[8]
