The Eveleth Hippodrome was built in the 1920s and the first ever game played was on January 1st, 1922. The Eveleth Reds opened this rink with a game against Duluth. With seating for over 3,000 spectators this rink was far ahead of its time and can hold more people than the newly opened ITMEC. In 1938 the Hipp was renovated to add a lobby, more locker rooms and removed the wood exterior. In 2002 there were 4 new locker rooms built for the Boys and Girls Varsity and JV teams along with 2 coaches rooms. Today the Hippodrome is home to the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears/Rock Ridge Eveleth/Virginia hockey team. Upon visiting the Hockey capital of America in Eveleth it is highly recommended that every hockey fan should venture down to the corner of Douglas and Jackson streets to witness the old historic Hippodrome, the building itself just smells of old hockey history including historic photos, jerseys, banners, and other Eveleth hockey artifacts that line the walls of the beloved old Hipp.
