Eyes The Horror Game is a indie survival horror game developed by Paulina Pabis and released in 2013. In the game, players take up on the role of a robber who enters reportedly haunted locations stealing moneybags while avoiding monsters present there.

Plot[edit]

PC Version[edit]

Players take the role of a robber who has been sent to a mansion to steal money. After having a chat with his partner, he breaks into the mansion to start the robbing. In the midst of doing so, he encounters the ghost in the mansion, a floating severed head with internal organs dangling down her neck. The player must use Eye Runes and eventually steal moneybags while avoiding the head. Later on, the robber escapes and has a chat with his partner again, but says he 'feels weird' and eventually disconnects.

The ghost's moan is eventually heard in the background.

Mobile Version[edit]

Chapter I : Krasue haunts the Mansion[edit]

Players take the role of a robber who breaks into a mansion to steal money. In the midst of doing so, he encounters a ghost who resembles his lover who died in a fire claiming he is the reason for her death. He uses Eye Runes to telepathically talk with her trying to apologize claiming he was locked by someone (referred to as 'him' in-game), but fails to gain her apology as she rejects claiming there is only 'hellfire' for them both. Using Eye Runes and carefully avoiding the floating head, he finds some notes stating 'Now it's your burden, poor soul.'. Eventually exploring the house more (if the player intends to do so instead of quickly escaping) he finds out a man called Mr. Miles lived previously in the house, trying to trap a curse. Eventually failing to do so, he locks his family in a hidden room of the mansion protected by a four picture puzzle. Learning that this curse might be involved with his vision of his deceased lover as a ghost, he eventually solves the four picture puzzle and it is revealed that the Miles family were trapped inside this room forever despite being safe. After claiming the last moneybag, the robber escapes the mansion and claims to 'go deeper' in this curse to free himself.

Chapter II : Charles, the Hospital Warden[edit]

After his encounter with his lover-turned enemy at the Mansion, the robber goes to an abandoned hospital where Mr. Miles was admitted moments before his disappearance. Roaming around the dark hallways, he hears a voice from someone he hates, and claims it to be just an 'echo'. After roaming around for some more time, he encounters his deceased father : Charles. Using mystical Eye Runes to argue with his father as to why he locked him in his room (therefore revealing Charles was the person the robber referred to as 'him' in Chapter I) resulting in Krasue's demise, he gets aggressive responses from Charles saying it was for the robber and an unmentioned 'mutt's' good. Being angry and bewildered upon encountering his father, the robber eventually stumbles upon a note belonging to the daughter of Mr. Miles, Emily Miles, and sees that Emily referred to her dad as 'depressed' and also says that her father wanted to spend the 'last few days' in their home. He stumbles upon more notes across the hospital while avoiding the ghost of his dead father, and reads a particular note mentioning that Emily saw her father in the basement making something out of a thick rope, and assumes it to be a swing. The robber realizes that Mr. Miles had committed suicide (seeing nooses in the Mansion's basement as well as psychatric ward documents) to 'escape' from the curse. He decides to exit the hospital and gather more information somewhere else.

Chapter III : Good Boy guards the School[edit]

The robber decides to go the school where Mr. Miles daughter, Emily, had studied. Upon reaching the school, he tries to learn about Emily's life, but is again confronted by another deceased relative of the robber : his pet dog (referred to as Good Boy in-game). Using Eye Runes, the robber connects with Good Boy. Good Boy remembers the way the robber treated him, telling the robber "I begged you to stop, Master." while the robber tries to apologize for the cruel beating he gave the dog. He therefore asks the robber "Was it because of what the other master did?" while the Robber breaks down excuses to try to calm him down. Despite not being aggressive, Good Boy still decides to 'punish' the robber as revenge for the beating. The robber, feeling more depressed that even his closest friend is against him, tries to break down evidence at the school forgetting Good Boy. He eventually escapes.. claiming that Good Boy was a 'poor pooch' and that he will return to him.. after he is done solving the mystery.

Chapter IV : Urusla curses the Mansion[edit]

Despite being the next enemy, not much is mentioned as to how the totem witch Ursula is connected to the robber. The plot is expected to come in the coming updates.

Gameplay[edit]

The gameplay of Eyes is very simple. The player must collect moneybags across the map whilst avoiding one of the four major antagonists, using the aid of Eye Runes to look through the antagonist's point of view and magic potions, when drank in the right order, can give you powers / extra eyes (Hospital only). If the enemy is chasing the player, the word RUN! will be shown in red at the top of the screen. Players can know when a ghost is in their current floor by hearing their moans, as well as noticing certain items shaking uncontrollably. The speed of the antagonist and amount of moneybags required for escaping depends on the difficulty, with Newbie being the easiest and Nightmare as the hardest difficulty. Winning games can give you coins, with which you can unlock more gameplay modes, enemies and content in the in-game shop. Coins rewards are multiplied by 2 in the first game each day, after that they're default. The amount of coins you get depends on the difficulty you won.

Newbie = 6 coins Easy = 12 coins Normal = 20 coins Hard = 30 coins Nightmare = 60 coins

In-game content and coins can also be bought with real money.

However in the PC version, there is only Krasue as one antagonist and Mansion as the only map, along with the enemy's AI slightly altered in a way so if a player picks up an eye rune or touches the stairways, Krasue will fastly come to that place. There are only three modes : Casual, Normal and Hard. The players can also do actions that cannot be done on mobile, such as running and jumping. The PC version also has a darker environment and a flashlight compared to mobile. There is also no coin reward system unlike mobile.

In the older versions, it was a plain nude holographic female ghost who was the main antagonist, but this was changed to a Krasue-like ghost in the later versions of both PC and mobile.

There are also several modes uncanon to the story mode the player can choose from :

Double Trouble[edit]

In this mode, Krasue and Charles are both the two main antagonists in the game. The gameplay is the same.. although it's slightly harder.

Trick or Treat[edit]

In this halloween-themed mode, players can chase a magic pumpkin to gain coin multipliers. Players can be greedy and chase the pumpkin forgetting that an antagonist exists, thus making the mode unique with the distraction. However if someone manages to chase the pumpkin long enough without getting caught by the ghost, it will soon collapse, with the max multiplier being 20.

Sandbox Mode[edit]

This mode is used for practicing by the player, as the map doesn't have a ghost in this mode. Players can freely roam the map, however they cannot use Eye Runes since there is no ghost to connect it with. Coins rewards are also decreased.

Endless Mode[edit]

In this mode, players cannot escape from the mansion and must collect an infinite generating amount of moneybags around the map while avoiding the antagonist, who gets faster over time. The gameplay is same except for the increasing difficulty.

Expert Mode[edit]

In this, players can configure which map and ghost they want, as well as the mode. For example, players can put Krasue in the hospital map whereas her actual location is Mansion in the story. However, they need to own the ghost, map and special mode to configure it, or else the game won't allow it.

Release[edit]

Eyes The Horror Game was released on 2013 by Paulina Pabis, and only got minor updates until the ghost was changed to a Krasue, and was abandoned until 2017 when the game recieved updates again introducing content for the mobile version like new maps and enemies, as well as the coin system and shop. The PC version is still abandoned as to today.

Reception[edit]

Despite being simple, Eyes was generally recieved with positive reviews, getting a user score of 7.3 based on ratings on Metacritic.

Controversy[edit]

After a YouTuber called Caffe TV started making fake theories claiming them to be true in Eyes The Horror Game, Paulina tweeted to inform the playerbase that all speculations marked true by Caffe TV were completely false. However this was still in doubt as Paulina used Caffe TV's theory of how the robber's lover became a demonic being for the journal update, however Caffe TV was eventually proven false after Paulina used different backstories for Charles and Good Boy, as well as the robber. Caffe TV still continues to make fake Eyes theories, however the developer has stated it is all false.
