Ezekiel Washington was born August 5th 1861 to the parents of Jedidiah Washington and Gertrud Johnson-Washington. Ezekiel was born in New Hope, Pennsylvania where his mom taught him to read and write. At a young age Ezekiel Washington showed interest in inventing things. At the age of 12 Ezekiel Washington's Father Jedidiah Washington got water in his ear while swimming and got bacterial meningitis which caused him to pass away at the age 31. After his fathers death Gertrud sent Ezekiel to live with his aunt and uncle Emmanuel and Ethel Washington. When Ezekiel was 15 he befriended Thomas Edison. Ezekiel and Thomas started working together. 2 years after they started working Thomas Edison had created the first lightbulb but had nowhere to put it. so Ezekiel went hard to work and created what we call today a light fixture. Ezekiel showed what he created to Thomas and it work perfect. So Thomas Edison used Ezekiel's invention to show case his light bulb but because of how society viewed African American's he never got the credit he deserved. while Ezekiel still had great respect for Thomas Edison he still felt he that he should get credit for his invention. While most people know George Washington carver as a great African American inventor not many people don't know about Ezekiel Washington he was one of the greatest minds of his time.
