A fantasy kitchen sink is a type of fictional universe which includes elements from all different genres of fiction. A fictional universe that has elements of science fiction, as well as fantasy, mystery, action, adventure, steampunk and horror and is a fantasy kitchen sink. The two most well known examples of fantasy kitchen sinks are the DC and Marvel universes, but there are many other universes that could be considered kitchen sinks as well.

Description[edit]

Imagine a fictional universe with many different characters with vastly different backgrounds and origins, including ninjas, magicians, robots, cyborgs, detectives, angels, demons, mutants, super soldiers, zombies, vampires, aliens, mad scientists, vigilantes, spies, golems, the Greek gods, the Egyptian gods and Cthulhu all in it. That is a fantasy kitchen. The term is a metaphor, as a kitchen sink may have so many items in it like knives, forks, spoons, plates, cups and bowls, but a fantasy kitchen sink replaces them with characters and elements of different fiction genres. Fantasy kitchen sinks are likely to combine multiple different mythologies, and combine both science and magic. The two most well known examples are the Marvel and DC Comics universes. For example, in the original Justice League, two of the members are aliens (Superman and Martian Manhunter), two of them are mythology based (Wonder Woman and Aquaman) and three of them are human, one using technology (Batman), one using magic (Green Lantern) and one using superpowers(the Flash). The same can be seen with the Marvel Comics universe. A superhero universe where all superpowers come from only one source, however, is not a fantasy kitchen sink.

Examples[edit]

Besides the Marvel and DC universes, other fantasy kitchen sinks include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Chronicles of Narnia, Dragon Ball Z, Overwatch and Mortal Combat.
