Féquière Lucien is a Haitian Kompa singer and entrepreneur who has been in the Haitian Music Industry since 1978.

Early Life[edit]

Fequiere Lucien[1] was born on December 14, 1956, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti of Haitian Parents, Philistin Lucien and Elizabeth Bellevue. His father was a builder in the construction business and his mother a housewife. He studied at Saint Louis de Gonzague, considered best school in Haiti, and Gregoire Eugene before leaving for the United States. Despite the fact that no one in his immediate family had any musical talents, at the age of 12, Féquière started showing interests in playing guitar and singing which was a very difficult undertaking in his teenage years. The reason for this was: In the 60's and the 70's most parents would not grant their children permission to become musicians.[2] Musicians were stereotyped and falsely labeled as cheaters, womanizers and lazy minded individuals who despised work. This mentality[3] pervaded and dominated the culture for decades and still today to a certain extent. But, by the time Féquière was 14 years of age, his father's decision to send him abroad to continue his studies pretty much open a new door for him to pursue his musical interests. Féquière spent some time in New York City before relocating to Boston, Massachusetts where it is said to have better schools and opportunities.

While in Boston, Féquière first went to ELC English Language Center to learn English. It was a school where newly settled teenaged immigrants from various countries would go to learn English and the new culture. He was subsequently admitted at Dorchester High School as a sophomore. Fequiere[4][5] struggled with the idea of whether he should study music or business in College. But, in the meantime, he was so passionate about his kompa music. While still in high school, his colleagues decided to put an eight piece band together. Féquière was overlooked because he was a minor. But, wanting to show off his talents, he composed a Ballad for the group. The group whose name was "Les Diplomates de Boston" thought the tune was great, performed it in the clubs and The audience danced and applauded. It was announced that night that the tune was composed by Féquière Lucien. This night marked the beginning of a musical journey that would culminate in many recorded songs and tunes that can now be found and played anywhere in the world.

Career[edit]

In 1978, a popular Haitian group named Volo Volo de Boston,[6] a Mini-jazz in the early 70s playing Kompa music,[7][8] was looking for a new singer to replace Ti Manno, who was a Haitian singer and an icon of the Kompa music.[9] Féquière Lucien, who was an unknown artist at the time, was referred to Hans Felix,[10] the band Leader, for an audition. Fequiere was chosen to join the group as Lead Vocalist amongst so many who auditioned for the spot. He was 22 years old, married and was pursuing an Accounting degree. He currently holds a degree in accounting from Northeastern University, and is owner of the group[11] Volo Volo de Boston.[12]

Féquière Lucien[13] recorded several Albums with Volo Volo de Boston[14] and other musical projects along the way with other musicians. Popular Albums he sings are: La-Nature, Nou Nan Route, 14 Karat Gold, 33rd anniversary and which included songs such as: Do it, Fè kow sekwé, Ayanman, Nou nan route, Mélodie, Minouche, Party time, Gason pale, Haïti, Yon sél Volo... Other Albums include: Racines and Konektion.
