Feuerkogel is a mountain west of the town of Ebensee in Upper Austria. Its elevation is 1,592 m (5,223 ft 1 in). It forms the eastern end of the mountain range called Höllengebirge, which extends between the lakes Attersee and Traunsee, and towers above the southern shore of Traunsee. The Höllengebirge belongs to the northern Limestone Alps.

Tourism[edit]

Since 1927 the Feuerkogel cable car has been leading from Ebensee up the mountain to an alpine hotel, also named Feuerkogel. This saves the ascent and facilitates tours to Großer Höllkogel or the Höllengebirge crossing to Hochleckenhaus, with a stopover at the mountain hut Rieder Hütte. Already in 1936 there was one of the first ski lifts, the "Stangenlift" for about 8 persons, located not far below the Schanzhütte. Today, however, lifts open up a total of 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) of ski slopes in winter. A very demanding 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) long unprepared downhill run leads from the mountain directly into the village of Ebensee.

Events[edit]

On the 80th anniversary of the cable car, a celebration and traditional nostalgia race was held on March 3 and 4, 2007. On 17 March 2007 the "King of Kogl" was chosen at the free-ride event. On March 31st the pig's head ski-jumping took place.

The sporting highlight is the annual mountain race up the Feuerkogel in August. This is one of the mountain runs with the most participants in Austria. In 1997 the European Mountain Running Championships were held. Today the race is part of the Grand Prix mountain race series of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Wind measurements on the Feuerkogel[edit]

On the summit of the Feuerkogel, the highest wind speed ever measured in Austria was recorded at 220 km/h (137 mph) on 26 December 1999 Hurricane Lothar. Due to the location exposed from the northwest, record values are repeatedly measured by the Feuerkogel wind measuring station during Atlantic storms. In January 2007, for example, the Austria-wide maximum value of 207 km/h (129 mph) was measured during Cyclone Kyrill.
