Flight Commander was an Intamin sky pilot ride located at Kings Island that lasted from 1990-1995 and sat by The Racer (Kings Island) on a concrete pad.

Description[edit]

Flight Commander was an Intamin flight trainer ride located at Kings Island that lasted from 1990-1995 and sat by The Racer (Kings Island) on a concrete pad. It would Raise up and then spin its riders until it got to the top, where it would come back down. To get to Flight Commander, you would have to go by the now existing Coca Cola Refreshment stand and follow a pathway into the queue where you would come up to the pad. The ride was located at the Coney Mall section of the park by Action Zone and Rivertown.

History[edit]

In 1989, Kings Entertainment Company announced that they would be building a ride in the former location of Kings Islands other ride that had been previously demolished, Zodiac. The ride would be called "Flight Commander", which references a leader in a group of Aircraft.

In 1990, construction was complete on Flight Commander.

In 1991, tragedy struck. A 32 year-old woman whom was intoxicated, fell from the ride, killing her. Investigators discovered a flaw in the rides design that let you slip from your seat to the next, and become separated from the restraints. The ride later reopened.

In 1992, Paramount Pictures bought out Kings Island from Kings Entertainment Company, but did not affect Flight Commander.

In 1995, Paramount's Kings Island announced that they would be demolishing the ride for good.
