Fly By Disc Golf League

The Brainerd, MN Fly By Disc Golf League was created in 2011 in conjunction with friends Greg Fagereng[1], Seth Warwas[2], and Christ Beyer[3]. From 2011 to 2018, the league has raised $5,095 and donated over a 1000 hours of community service to improve Brainerd-area disc golf courses. At Lum Park alone, the league has donated 6 baskets ($2,070), 9 cement tee pads ($1,500), and six bridges for water safe crossings ($275). In 2018, the league boasted of 34 active members.

Governing Board[edit]

Greg Fagereng and Seth Warwas were the sole Administrators of the Facebook page until Cedie Doyle joined their ranks in 2015. 2017 was the first league season with a Governing Board, which consisted of Andrew Hardy[4], Caleb Johnson, Greg Fagereng, Cedie Fagereng, and Phillip Granley. Later that year, Paul Johnson joined the Governing Board as Course Maintenance Supervisor. After Andrew Hardy's relocation to Fargo, ND near the end of the 2018 season, it was decided to add Riley Nelson as Marketing Director. Fly By Governing Board positions have been filled as follows:

  • Secretary and Treasurer: Cedie Fagereng 2014-present
  • Sponsorship Director: Caleb Johnson 2017-present
  • Membership Director: Paul Johnson 2018-present, Phillip Granley 2017-2018 season
  • Course Maintenance Supervisor: Phillip Granley 2018-present, Paul Johnson 2017-2018 season
  • Event Director: Andrew Hardy 2017-2018 season
  • Marketing Director: Riley Nelson 2018-present

Competition[edit]

For most of the season, league competition centers around tag position. Better players receive the lower tag position, with the #1 tag being the most sought after. Tag matches occur during weekly league events during the summer, at monthly tournaments, or impromptu challenges at any time during the league season.

At the end of the season, there is a final bracket challenge, which can vary between 16 and 32 participants. Winners of the match advance to the next round, until a champion is crowned. The Champion receives the traveling trophy until the next league season, when a new Champion is crowned. Previous Champions are listed below:

From 2011 to 2018, the number of disc golf courses in the Brainerd-area has grown from six to 11. Brainerd, MN Fly By Disc Golf League members designed the following disc golf courses:

  • 2013: St Mathias Disc Golf Course designed by Greg Fagereng[5]
  • 2013: Central Lakes College Course designed by Mark Englund[6]
  • 2013: Rainy River Disc Course designed by Chris Beyer[7]
