Food Advertising to Children

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Can you recall your favorite childhood food commercial or advertisement? How about Tony the Tiger’s They’re Gr-r-reat! or I’m lovin it by Mc Donald’s? They probably ring a bell to most of us, but what most of us do not realize, food marketing to children and adolescents is not just entertainment, it is a billion-dollar industry and it can be harmful. Two billion dollars in marketing money goes towards sugary, fatty, and salty food products annually. Unhealthy food marketing contributes to poor diet and leads to obesity. Health Affairs (2017).  In order to protect our children from exploitive food advertisement, we must have legislation to limit food advertisement on all media platforms aimed toward children. The opposition claims this infringes on free speech and it is their duty to inform the public of their products. The opposition also claims it is the parent’s responsibility to determine whether they make the purchase in the end.  Currently the FCC limits commercials on children’s television shows to 10.5 minutes per hour however, there is no limit on the internet leaving children and adolescents subjected to 100 percent advertisement. Calvert (2008).
