Football tourism
Football tourism refers to travel which involves attending a live football match whilst visiting another country. It is particularly prevalent with inbound visitors to Britain (about one in every forty-three visitors[1]). The 1996 Behaviour of Spectators study by Alan Tapp (also referred to in Soccernomics[2]), found the breakdown of an average 21,000 Premier League crowd to be as follows:
- Group 1: 8,000 season tickets
- Group 2: 8,000 from a group of 15,000 or so regulars
- Group 3: 5,000 casual fans
The latter group is where the 'football tourist' is found.
