Personal Life[edit]

Francisco was born in Washington D.C. into an artistic family and raised in Mexico City. He is the eldest of three sons born to African American sculptor/ printmaker Elizabeth Catlett and Mexican painter Francisco Mora, Sr. Francisco is also the father of American fashion model Naima Mora.[1]

In 1970, Mora Catlett studied African percussion with Babatunde Olatunji at Berklee College of Music. From there, he moved back home to Mexico City in 1973. While Sun Ra was in Mexico City for a performance, the two met and began a working relationship that would last 7 years, bringing Francisco back to the Unites States as part of the Arkestra.[2]

After receiving a grant, Francisco moved to NYC and began studying with jazz legend Max Roach and would later join and record with Roach's M'Boom percussion group. From here, Mora moved to Michigan and started collaborating with Detroit Techno pioneer Carl Craig as part of the InnerZone Orchestra.[3]

Today, Francisco lives in NYC with his family and performs regularly with AfroHorn and OYU ORO as well as other projects.
