Frida Fredrikke Waaler Wærvågen (born 1988 in Horten) is a Norwegian cellist.[1][2]

Biography[edit]

Wærvågen started her musical career at the age of five at the local music school in Horten. From the age of ten she was attended Barratt Due Institute of Music, and studied the cello under Professor Aage Kvalbein. Later she joined the Norwegian Academy of Music where she studied under Professor Truls Mørk. For many years she studied at the Royal College of Music under Professor Frans Helmerson, and Professor Torleif Thedéen at the Edsberg Castle.[1][2]

She has since the age of 11, received a series of international and national awards and scholarships, like ”Young Musician” in Tallin, Antonia Janigro International Cello Competition in Porec, Arve Tellefsen Music Price, RWE Dea Music Scholarship, Järnåker and recently she received "Wesselprisen" from Det Norske Selskab, Norway Club. She has made her mark as a soloist with several orchestras at home and abroad such as the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Münchner Rundfunkorkester, Zürich Chamber Orchestra, Kaunas Philharmonic and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. In 2016 she was invited as soloist to the Rosendal Chamber Music Festival.[3]

Wærvågen has worked as a solo cellist in the Royal Swedish Opera Orchestra in Stockholm and is now a freelance cellist based in Oslo with many engagements both as a solo cellist with orchestras and as a chamber musician. She is also a section leader in the string orchestra Ensemble Allegria. She plays a cello made by Nicolas Lupot (1823).[4]
