Furniture Sharehouse
Furniture Sharehouse is a furniture bank located in Westchester County, New York.[1] They belong to the National Furniture Bank Association. [2] Furniture banks are similar to food banks; they collect donated furniture from the community and redistribute it to those who are in need. [3]
History
Furniture Sharehouse opened its doors in 2007 due to the efforts of Larchmont resident Kate Bialo who wanted to create a shared warehouse to store furniture until it was needed. As Past President and Community Grants Coordinator for Junior League of Westchester on the Sound, Ms. Bialo learned that there was a great need in the community for furniture but that social service agencies had no place to store items.[4] [5] [6]
Location
Furniture Sharehouse is located at Westchester County Airport (HPN) at Building 3, Airport Road, White Plains, NY 10604. It is open for drop-offs Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30am to 11:30am and the third Saturday of each month, also from 9:30am to 11:30am. [7] Pick-up may be available for a nominal fee. Operations
Furniture Sharehouse works with over 30 Westchester based social service agencies who refer clients to Furniture Sharehouse. Clients must reside in Westchester County and include those who are moving out of homeless shelters, escaping domestic violence, transitioning out of foster care, working families struggling to stay ahead, and those impacted by fires/floods etc, and more.[10] Clients are accompanied by a case worker and visit Furniture Sharehouse's warehouse by appointment. During the appointment, they are assigned a personal shopper, a Furniture Sharehouse volunteer, and they pick out basic furniture to help transform their empty apartments into a home. A typical client gets a bed, nightstand, dresser, sofa, end table, arm chair, coffee table, kitchen table and chairs, a rug, 2 lamps, and 3 pieces of art. [11] [12] [13] [14]
Since 2007, Furniture Sharehouse, a NY based charity, has furnished homes for over 11,000 Westchester residents in need.[15] Furniture Sharehouse is a New York State Not-for-Profit corporation and is tax exempt under IRS Section 501(c)(3). [16]
