The Golf Course Superintendents Association of New Jersey (GCSANJ) is an American organization of golf course superintendents in New Jersey and surrounding states. Formerly known as The Greenkeepers Assocation of New Jersey, the Association serves as a local chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) located in Lawrence, Kansas. Founded in 1926[1] and headquartered in Pluckemin, New Jersey, GCSANJ is made up of 578 men and women members. The GCSANJ exists to serve the golf course superintendent by advancing the profession, offering professional development, and fostering relationships for all members.

History[edit]

The roots of GCSANJ began "under a small tree next to the barn" on September 14, 1926, where a small group of greenkeepers met at Crestmont Country Club to join for a common cause.[2]The Association formed with three goals in mind:

  • To Elevate the greenkeeping profession to a dignified status.
  • To advance the welfare of its members.
  • To establish a system of education and training.

The following year on April 11, 1927, The Greenkeepers Assocation of New Jersey called their first meeting, adopted a set of bylaws and authored a constitution.[3] There were 15 charter members. Dues were set at $5 per annum.[4]

By 1932, the Association had grown to 52 members, but dues were lowered to $3 per annum due to effects of the Great Depression.[5]

In 1936, the Association received a charter of affiliation from the National Association of Greenkeepers of America.[6]

In 1940, a motion is approved to change the association name to the New Jersey Greenkeeping Superintendents Association.[7]

Grass Clippings, the Association bulletin is first mailed in March of 1953. In the same year, another name change, to New Jersey Golf Course Superintendents Assocation is approved.[8]

In 1980, The Greenerside is first published as the Association newsletter.[9]

In 2000, GCSANJ organized a coalition of 18 green industry allies and partners to form the New Jersey Alliance for Water Conservation to work in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to develop guidelines for water use during times of drought.[10]
