Gerard J. Gianoli, M.D. is an American surgeon, researcher, educator, and associate professor. He is known for identifying and repairing the superior canal dehiscence syndrome,[1] a disorder where a hole in the skull bone upsets the inner ear balance canal,[2] For refining measurement of Tympanic Membrane Displacement for Intracranial pressure monitoring now used on The International Space Station.[3] A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, he is also a member of the Triologic Sociey,[4] The American Otological Society and American Neurotology Society.

Early life and education[edit]

Dr. Gianoli completed his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering and also received his M.D. from Tulane University Medical School in 1986. He completed his initial residency training in surgery at Tulane University Medical Center from 1986 until 1987. From 1987 until 1988 Gianoli then completed a postgraduate year in Pediatrics. From 1988 until 1992 he was a resident in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at the Tulane University Medical Center. Afterwards, from 1994 until 1995 he completed a clinical fellowship in otology and Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery at The Michigan Ear Institute.[5]

Tulane University[edit]

In 1992 Gianoli joined the faculty of the Tulane University School of Medicine as an assistant professor of otolaryngology. He became an associate professor in 1997 in the departments of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery and the department of Pediatrics.[5]

EAR and BALANCE INSTITUTE

Gianoli has continued his work in balance and inner ear disorders, and since 1998 he has performed more[2] than 400 Superior Canal Dehiscence Surgeries,[6] in conjunction with his work at The Ear And Balance Institute Treating patients from both inside the United States[7] and internationally,in a comprehensive vestibular testing lab.[8][9][10][11][12][13][2]

International Space Station[3]

Data gathered by Drs Gianoli and Soileau at The Ear and Balance Institute has formulated a basis for predicting difficulties for occupants of The International Space Station through their use of TMD Displacement measurements.[14][3]

Epley Omniax/Non-invasive Cerebrospinal Pressure Measurement[15][16] One of a limited number of Epley Omniax Chairs in the USA is run by Dr Gianoli at The Ear and Balance Institute[17][18][13] The Ear and Balance Institute also maintains one of the few (outside of NASA)[14] Non-invasive CSF monitors in the world.[19]

Scientific research/ Books/Editorial Duties[edit]

Gianoli has worked in balance and inner ear disorders, serving on the editorial board of The Laryngoscope ( Editor in Chief 1997-2004).[20][21] He serves on a number of other editorial boards, including ENT Today[22] Dr Gianoli has been published in numerous medical journals and authored more than thirty book chapters in Otolaryngology and Neurotology.[23] Dr Gianoli has produced the online course Gianoli, G. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.[77] and the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery,[77] Dr. Gianoli has been an active member of The American Academy of Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) where he has been involved in the third party free practice movement.[78][79][22][80][81]

Gerard Gianoli, M.D. as a Neuro-otologist and working in vestibular injury and has been cited for his work in publications, including "A Hole In My Life", by Phillipa Thomson (ISBN 978-0-9935989-0-6 Search this book on .), and THE GUARDIAN In the book (page 229) the author notes:

"Dr Gianoli had treated patients with SCDS for longer than anyone in the world, starting in January 1998, and by the time of writing his total number of SCDS surgeries had easily surpassed three hundred-there was no-one else who had done anywhere near that number. The only person who had treated the condition prior to him had been Dr Minor, and he had retired from clinical practice some time ago."[82]

At another point in the book, the author details how Dr Gianoli, in addition to Superior Canal Dehiscence Superior canal dehiscence Surgeries his work at The Ear and Balance Institute[83] provided monitoring data for the International Space Station (p.133):

"In 2012, NASA and the Ear and Balance Institute were able to collaborate on a research study, to help prove the utility and safety of the equipment. After careful analysis of more than a thousand of the institute's patients' results from TMD, alongside about six hundred lumbar puncture results taken on the operating table, Dr Marchbank's invention was approved for use on the International Space Station, putting him at the forefront of space medicine."[82]
