Gertrude Ferguson Penfield Seiberling

Gertrude Ferguson Penfield Seiberling was born on January 23, 1866, in Willoughby, Ohio[2] to James Wakeman Penfield & Elsie Ferguson Penfield. She was the youngest of 4 children in the Penfield family, who owned Penfield Brick & Tile Company (1853-1927) a leading manufacturer of drain tile and wire-cut brick for construction.
Gertrude attended Lasell Seminary for Young Women in Auburndale, Massachusetts, from 1883 – 1887. It was there that she became friends with Harriet “Hattie” Seiberling, F.A. Seiberling’s younger sister.
Gertrude and F.A. Seiberling were married on October 12, 1887 at her parent’s estate in Willoughby, Ohio.[1] The couple lived in Akron and had seven children: John Frederick (Fred) 1888-1962; Irene Henrietta 1890-1999; Willard Penfield, 1892-1891, James Penfield 1898-1982; Gertrude Virginia 1899-1971; Grace Wenonah 1901-1902, and Franklin Augustus, Jr. 1908-1990.
Gertrude died on January 8, 1946 from complications of heart disease.[2]
