Getaway is a startup company that develops, designs, builds and rents collections of small cabins (“Outposts”) near concentrated urban areas of the United States. The company is based in Brooklyn, NY and currently features cabins near major metropolitan areas like Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Portland, Los Angeles and Seattle[1].

Guests are provided coordinates for the cabin locations only after making a reservation and seven days before their stay. Cabins include beds, a bathroom, a small kitchen and a lock box designed to store the smartphones of guests[2].

History[edit]

Getaway House was founded by Jon Staff and Pete Davis, both alumni of Harvard University, and launched in 2015[3]. The first collection of cabins, located near Boston, was designed by Addison Godine, Wyatt Komarin and Rachel Moranis — all students at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design[4]. The first full time employees were Aaron Vomberg and Sarah Ruehlow. Until summer 2016, the team was based out of the Harvard Innovation Lab in Cambridge, MA.

After an appearance on the ABC television show Shark Tank, in which the founders turned down an offer from venture capitalist Chris Sacca for a $7 million total valuation,[2] the company received $15 million[5] in Series A funding from from L Catterton, a Connecticut-based private equity firm[2]
