Biography[edit | edit source]

Gordon 'Kid' Robson is a Scottish letterer and cartoonist who has worked for, among others, IPC Magazines, and both Marvel Comics US and Marvel UK from 1985 to 2000. Mainly active as a letterer, Robson is probably best known for his work on 2000AD, where he lettered the entire run of Zenith and most Strontium Dogs from 1986 on.

He also worked as a resize artist on IPC comic libraries, mainly on Buster comic. Resizing involves "taking a PMT (Photo-Mechanical Transfer) of a standard size strip and turning one page into two to fit the dimensions of the smaller format," explained Robson in an interview on the Buster website, "... I put a lot of work into them, in order to make the "joins" as invisible as it was possible to achieve."[1]

Robson also worked as a restoration artist for the last two of Marvel's original run of Marvel Masterworks volumes.

After Robert Maxwell's acquisition of IPC's Youth Group, many titles fell casualty to cutbacks, leaving many freelancers without work, but 20000AD remained. With the advent of computer fonts during the late 1990s, traditional hand-lettering was no longer in demand, and Robson found fewer outlets for his work. A congenital liver disorder now prevents him from pursuing his former profession.

A comics collector and historian for over 50 years, Robson attracted some controversy when his blog - Crivens! Comics & Stuff[2] criticised the 2010 relaunch of The Dandy, incurring the ire of several fans of - and contributors to - the comic.

Robson continues to write on the subject of comics, and collect them, to this day.
