The Balkan Wars[edit]

During the First Balkan War the Greek army entered Macedonia . Almost all neutral sources agree that other than the region of Chalkidiki and the area around Kozani, there were almost no Greeks in Macedonia other then a few pockets such as in Doxato. Even after the outbreak of the second Balkan War Greek troops were committing attractties against the civilian population , especially rapes [15] . This was not stopped as officers did nothing and other soldiers could not intervene . For example :

"Peniu Penev : I saw six soldiers trying to violate a young girl . Another soldier protested , but they threatened him with their bayonets . "[15]

The presence of Serbian soldiers would often help to prevent such atrocities[15]

Ioannis Metaxas , who was head of Greek military operations in Macedonia during the Balkan Wars , has been accused of orchestrating a genocide of between 23000[19] and 120000[20] . From letters by Greek soldiers captured by the Bulgarian army during the second Balkan War , the extent of the Greek atrocities against the civilian population became evident .[15]For example :

"River Niesto , 12 July , 1913                                                                                                     Here at Vrondou ( Brodi ) I took 5 Bulgarians and a girl from Serres . We shut them up in a prison and kept them there . The girl was killed and the other Bulgarians also suffered . We picked out their eyes while they were still alive                                                yours affectionately : Costi"[15]
"Nestos , 13 July , 1913                                                             village Banitsa                                If you want to know about the parts we are marching , all are Bulgarian villages , and everyone has fled . Those who remain get 'eaten' by the Manlicher rifle and we have burned a few villages . The Bulgarians suffer the same fate at the hands of the Serbians"[15]

The impact of the population exchange on the demography of Greece

In the treaty of Neuilly-sur-Seine the entirety of the Bulgarian population of West Thrace was expelled , and given no compensation for the properties from which they had been forced out [19] . During the Greco-Turkish population exchange the regions which took in the most Greeks from Anatolia were Macedonia and Thrace , as the government could redistribute the properties of the Slavs who had been forced out of the region .

The Greek civil War[edit]

the KKE promised rights and fair treatment of the ethnic Macedonians , and set up many cultural institutions , which were later destroyed by the Hellenic Army of the kingdom of Greece[21] Over 100000 ethnic Macedonians were expelled along with Greek communists after the defeat of the KKE .

Denial of re-entry to Greece[edit]

Many people who had fled the country were also denied visa for re-entry into Greece. The refugees planned on attending weddings, funerals and other events but were denied access to Greece. These measures were even extended to Australian and Canadian citizens, many of whom have been barred from entering Greece.[22][23] There have been claims that exiles who left Greece were prevented from re-entering Greece when other nationals from the Republic of Macedonia had little or no difficulty when entering Greece. The Greek Helsinki Monitor has called on the Greek government to stop using articles of the Citizenship code to deprive, "non-ethnic Greeks", of their citizenship.[24]

Greek denial of a Slavic minority in Greece[edit]

The Greek position on the Slavic speakers of Greek Macedonia is simply that they don't exist , and that all Slavs in Greece left in population exchanges which included less then 75000 Slavs in total ( not including Thrace ).[25] [19] The Greek army also used violence to attempt to force the Slavic population of Macedonia to identify as Greek even before the outbreak of the outbreak of the second Balkan War [15]
