Guataca

Guataca is a folkloric Cuban musical instrument derived by repurposing a gardening hoe blade with a short metallic striker. The guataca accompanies many Cuban percussion batteries and musical forms such as Bembe, Yuka, Palo, and many others.

The unique aesthetic and timbral quality of the metal on metal creates a particular sonority that is greatly desired in certain Afrocuban rhythms as opposed to wood on wood sound of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat%C3%A1 guagua / cata.

Although most folkloric musicians prefer the actual forged steel hoe-blade form of the guataca, there are mounting friendly versions build for the modern drummer as well. One such model is by Pearl brand however due to its construction of low weight metal alloys it is quite undesirable when playing folkloric Cuban music.
