Guillaume Bruère (born in 1976 in Châtellerault) is a french painter, draftsman, sculptor and performance artist. He lives and works in Berlin.
Biography[edit]
Guillaume Bruère graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts de Nantes (DNSEP) in 1999 and received a master's degree from the École européenne supérieure de l'image in Poitiers in 2003. He moved to Berlin the same year, where he lives and works ever since.
Fascinated by major artists of art history (Holbein, Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, Van Gogh, Giacometti, Picasso, Bacon) since 2009 Guillaume Bruère has been working in many museums and prestigious institutions (e.g. Kunsthaus Zurich, Musée Picasso Paris, Fondation Vincent Van Gogh Arles) to reinterpret their works mostly in drawings.[1]
From his confrontation with the art of the past (Egyptian, Greek, Mexican art, heraldry,[2]...) the expressiveness of his gesture, the safety of his line and the collage emerge through colour - a singular, dense universe of extraordinary vitality which is found in many of his drawings, but also in his paintings, sculptures and performances.[3]
Especially with his performances Guillaume Bruère shows - to the point of exhaustion - the act of creation but also the energy that presides over his complete works.[4]
In 2013 he began a new phase of work related to the performing arts. In a live performance he collaborated with Sasha Waltz and her company on "Dialoge 20-13" at the Avignon Festival. Later on he participated in the creation of the costumes and the scenography for the "Après-midi d'un Faune" at the Berlin State Opera.[5] The following year he met Barbara Frey, who gave him the opportunity to draw during her rehearsals at the Schauspielhaus Zurich. He accompanied three of her productions between 2014 and 2015.
In 2014 Guillaume Bruère's participation in the opening exhibition of the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh Arles entitled "Van Gogh Live!" opened up new international perspectives in Switzerland, the United States,[6] Germany, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium and Spain.
As a relentless creator he never stops producing. Between 2015 and 2016 he was confronted with the realities of refugees in a camp. First in Berlin and then in Graz he began working on a series of portraits that were presented successively at the Deutsches Historisches Museum, the Schadow Haus in Berlin, the Verbindungsbüro - Bundestag in Brussels, the Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten in Graz and, since the beginning of 2020, are shown at Le CENTQUATRE (Paris). With these drawings he transfers the humanity of his models and makes them visible again. By the strength of his line he captures the intensity of everyday life, captures reality and reflects them in his striking works.[7]
At the same time, Guillaume Bruère engages himself wholeheartedly in painting. Within a few years, painting became his medium of expression par excellence. His vital urge to create transforms into remarkable large-format paintings.
