Gurdwara Sahib Nanaksar, Ballygunge

Gurdwara Sahib Nanaksar, also known as Gurdwara Sahib Ballygunge is a Gurdwara or Sikh Temple located in the Indian city of Kolkata, in the state of West Bengal.[1] The Gurdwara is located inside a personal appartment and a monthly service is held every full moon day. The monthly service is known as the Puranmashi Jod Mela. [2]

Sant Baba Gajjan Singh ji, a Sikh holy saint, inspired by Sant Baba Nand Singh ji from Nanaksar Kaleran started a monthly service to be held every full moon day in a place located at Lord Sinha Road in Kolkata in the year 1941. [3] The service was very popular among people all over West Bengal, and a large number of Bengali and Sikh men and women attended the service. The venue of the monthly service was shifted from Lord Sinha Road to Gurdwara Garcha Sikh Sangat in Garcha area of Kolkata in 1959. In 1966, due to insistence of S.Balwant Singh Ahluwalia and S.Charan Singh, the venue of the service was shifted to their residence located in the Ballygunge Place Area of Kolkata.A Gurdwara was also established there and daily Nitnem was started. [4] The legacy of Sant Baba Gajjan Singh ji was carried forward after his death in 1994, by his son Dr. Sukhwant Singh ji,Bhai Pyara Singh ji and members of the Walia family residing there.
