HSE Art and Design School is a Russian educational institution aimed at training of specialists in design, fashion and contemporary art. It is the part of the major state-owned National Research University – Higher School of Economics (HSE) and its Faculty of Communications, Media and Design.[1] It was founded in 2013 in Moscow, in 2018 the Saint Petersburg branch was opened.

History and profiles[edit]

In 2013 the Faculty of Design of HSE was created after reorganization of Design Department at Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics. The head of the Faculty was appointed Arseniy Mescheryakov, the creator of a design studio called "Agey Tomesh" and a publishing house called "WAM Books".

In 2014 the Faculty was re-arranged into HSE Art and Design School and was made part of Faculty of Communications, Media and Design of HSE.

Firstly, there were 4 specializations for graduates at the School, called "profiles": "communications design", "environmental design", "animation and illustration" and "fashion". By 2017, more profiles were added and grouped into 3 main branches: design, fashion and contemporary art. These include specializations in photography, computer programming, game design and virtual reality, theatre and cinema artwork, jewelry, territorial branding and urban design.

Structure[edit]

The School provides bachelor's and master's degrees, postgraduate studies and Further education. The main office is located in the central Moscow (Malaya Pionerskaya street) and features 25 computer classrooms, 2 photo studios, workshops for jewellery, silkscreen, porcelain and pre-print production, and a specialized design library.

Besides education, the School maintains research, commercial, exhibition and publishing projects. These are supported by an outstanding department called HSE Design Lab.[2] Both professional designers and current undergraduates work there. Generally, School students are typically involved in professional activities,[3][4][5][6] and usually obtain a portfolio besides diploma when graduated.

The School also provides free lessons for public at an online platform called National Open Education Platform,[7] maintained by Russian Ministry of Education and Science.[8]
