Handicapped is a 2020 Nigerian Drama, Thriller film from Alvary Studios, directed by Seun Arowoloju and Produced by Roy Osuji. The film stars Valerie 'Dish' Udemba and Rotimi Salami as the lead actors. The film premiered on 28 February 2020. The movie is focused on irregular migration as a leads to human trafficking in Africa.

PLOT/SYNOPSIS[edit]

Resolute in her quest to escape poverty, a young African girl finds herself entangled in a web of traffickers. Ese wants to become a medical doctor and provide for her mother, the only family she has. With no money to finance her dreams, she is desperate to seek a brighter future in Europe. Her lack of prior knowledge coupled with her dreams of a brighter future were the catalysts that took her through the process of irregular migration as she enlisted the help of a trusted family friend who betrayed her when he sold her into the uncompromising clutches of human traffickers to meet a demand. Finding herself in a wayside camp in the Niger Republic, she builds strong ties with one of the traffickers, Abdul. He decides to help her escape but pays a bitter price for his endeavours.[1]

PRODUCTION AND RELEASE[edit]

The film was produced by Mindyard 204 Productions. Directed by Seun Arowoloju and Produced by Roy Osuji. Handicapped was set in Lagos State,Nigeria and officially released on 28 February 2020. Handicapped was shown exclusively shown at the Genesis Cinema Nationwide.[2][3]

RECEPTION[edit]

Handicapped received favourable reviews from critics. According to Yinka Olatunbosun of This Day[1] she described it as an " intriguing movie that played out a visual documentation of several real life ordeals of both young girls and boys." Ezeji Emmanuel made reference to the movie as "A breath of Fresh Air" adding to the harsh reality of what happens when you embark on the journey by crook.
