Hanzo Archives is a web and media archiving company incorporated in the UK and registered in England[1][2]. As per the wikipedia List of Web Archiving Initiatives, "Hanzo Archives is a commercial web archiving services and appliances, for government and corporations whose compliance or legal obligations / needs extend to their websites, intranet, and social media"[3] A secondary reference also confirms this company offers commercial web native archiving services for e-discovery.[3]
Hanzo offers legally defensible collection and preservation of native format web and social media content. Hanzo Archives,on its website[4] is a commercial offering, by ex-employees of the British Library (no longer associated with the British Library), that offers commercial captures of dynamic, native web content. Hanzo is active in the public research side often providing public services through government agencies to increase public interaction with state services[5]. Hanzo Archives is not associated with and should not be confused with Hanzo.
The Welsh Government's Information and Archive Service carried out a national project to explore making tweets available via its Soutron Library Management System[6]. This was a research project that was made available nationally to all users of the Welsh Government Web Resources[7]. Tweets were also used to enrich the Governments collection of consultation documents and provide additional context to the collections[8]. Technical contribution to the project was defined as writing a code to extract relevant tweets covering national policy on organ donation, rhoi organau (Welsh language term), #organdonation and #rhoiorganau[9].
Hanzo provided the data via download URLs that allowed us to transfer the collection to our systems using Winzip. After analysing the data we decided that the majority of Tweets and Retweets were worthy of retention, whilst the Feeds, Hashtags and Replies were less likely to have any research or re-use value. According to Netpreserve.org the International Internet Consortium Preservation Consortium, the company offers preservation solutions for websites, interactive pages, media rich sites. Public social media like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and collaborative systems like SharePoint and Wiki’s.. There is also a reference to private social networks captures such as Chatter[10], Jive[11] and Yammer[12]"
