HedgeSPA

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

HedgeSPA (abbreviation for "Sophisticated Predictive Analytics for Hedge Funds and Leading Institutions") is a privately held B2B financial technology company that offers a cloud-based investment analytics platform for the buy side of the financial industry, for institutional users such as asset managers, asset sponsors, insurers, pensions, private banks and family offices. It is a private limited company registered in Singapore since 2011.

History[edit]

Company Founder and CEO Dr. Bernard Lee is a former award-winning managing director at BlackRock in New York City and a former finance professor in the US and Singapore. As part of BlackRock’s portfolio management group, Dr. Lee put his PhD thesis in quantitative finance into practice. Subsequently, he won the first North American Financial Technology Award from Waters Technology based on that implementation, which was sold to large, third-party institutional investors to analyze their full portfolios including any assets managed outside of BlackRock.

In 2003, Dr. Lee submitted his Ph.D. thesis to Imperial College London, under supervision by Professor Nicos Christofides, Director of its Centre for Quantitative Finance. Due to UK Copyright law, Dr. Lee became the owner of intellectual property rights on his published and refereed research. With a successful application for R&D grants awarded by the National Research Foundation under Singaporean Prime Minister's Office, Dr. Lee updated and moved these investment analytics to the cloud.

In 2011, the Company spun out of Singapore Management University as an independent entity to pursue the second stage of its R&D grants.[8]

In 2013, the Company established its presence in the San Francisco Bay Area.[10]

In 2016, the Company raised its first round of external funding from third-party investors. The Singapore Management University received 6% of its shares from an intellectual property assignment agreement due to the R&D grants.

In 2017, the Company established an office at Cyberport in Hong Kong in response to customer demands.

Company Locations[edit]

HedgeSPA's technical and data center is located at the Block 71 innovation hub in Singapore. The company has a wholly-owned subsidiary in Hong Kong, HedgeSPA Limited, which drives its commercial activities.

Products[edit]

The Company has two main product lines:

1. Investment Analytics: The HedgeSPA Core Investment Platform uses Artificial Intelligence and Big Data techniques to simulate all potential combinations of fundamental and economic factors from all available on-line sources, including sentiment scores on social media and news on target investments.  The machine and its models can learn from their own prediction errors. These asset selection rankings are then processed by algorithms taken from systematic investment managers such as tail-risk enhanced drawdown control under multiple, probability-weighted forward-looking market scenarios. This results in investment portfolios with steady absolute return profiles and attractive drawdown characteristics, as expected by typical institutions for asset-liability management purposes. The workflow of the platform is designed to enhance and automate portfolio construction and rebalancing cycles followed by institutional investors.

2. Index Products: HedgeSPA publishes a variety of basket, index and factor products for institutional investors who prefer customized investment baskets to traditional Exchange Traded Funds. For example, HedgeSPA acts as the basket agent for a medium term note created by an investment bank or as a customer managed account at a third-party broker, or the institutional investor can gain unfunded exposure via a swap traded with its prime broker.
