Hillcrest Wood

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Hillcrest Wood is a small area of ancient woodland in the London Borough of Lewisham and is a part of the Hillcrest Estate. It was formerly known as Westwood and now hugs two openings to old railway tunnels that are known hibernation roosts for the Brown long-eared bat.[1]. The old railway tunnels were a part of the Crystal Palace and South London Junction Railway that was built to serve the the Crystal Palace after the building was moved from Hyde Park. The line was closed in 1954. The wood is a remnant of The Great North Wood and is currently managed by The London Wildlife Trust as a part of The Great North Wood Project.

The canopy is dominated by ancient English oak and European hornbeam, and also contains sweet chestnut and sycamore, whilst the ground flora consists of stinging nettle, ramsons, bramble, common bluebell and creeping soft grass. The woodlands stand on a steep embankment and are partially publicly accessible due to their topography.

The estate that surrounds the woodland was built in 1967[2]
