Hitwicket - Cricket Strategy Game is a 2015 Sports Strategy Game published by Hitwicket Cricket Games[1] for Android and iOS devices. Hitwicket blends Strategy and Sports by introducing Managerial and Team Ownership for users.Users purchase new Players - batsmen and bowlers alike - and train them to compete in league matches and climb the leader-boards in a highly competitive setting. Hitwicket enjoys moderate popularity in the Indian Subcontinent, including but not limited to countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. The game has gained further following and credibility in the Sports Strategy sub-genre owing to several offline fan meetups[2].

Although the game received a positive response upon release for its novel concept and unique match-making technology, it's been criticized for its steep learning curve, irregular updates and occasionally buggy tournaments.

Origin[edit]

The concept behind Cricket-based Strategy Gaming was framed way back in 2009 by college buddies Kashyap Reddy and Rishav Rastogi[3] - students of Vellore Institute of Technology who cited their deep love for Football Manager games as an inspiration behind the game. Being college students, they lacked the capital to finance their ideas and took up web services projects to gather funds for their dreams. Two years later in 2011, the duo hired more developers to actualize the idea and released a private-beta for web browsers which opened up to limited, but positive reception. With more employees in the fold and Keerti Singh[4] - a fellow VITian - joining the team in 2015, Hitwicket was released for the mobile phone[5]

Gameplay[edit]

Users step into the shoes of a Cricket Team Manager and are responsible for leading their team - from training the players, regulating Gym Sessions, setting line-ups and matches for progression. Training is carried out in the form of specific Coaching Cards; with some dedicated to the various types of cricketing abilities, namely Seam, Spin, Fielding etc. Players can add new players to their line-ups by placing bids during auctions and Scouting for fresh talent.

The user gains experience as he/she plays more matches and may earn Hitcoins for Achievements, daily or otherwise. Hitcoins are the most important in-game currency and can be used to redeem a lot of important elements (new batsmen, bowlers, coaching cards, etc.) and can be purchased with real-life (hard) currency[6]. The strategy behind winning matches in Hitwicket lies upon how well the team in managed. Optimal training and leveraging powerful batsmen and bowlers is the key to winning tournaments and competing with others. Further modes like Blitz and F5 add more challenging elements to the game, coercing the user into shifting gears to adapt to new environments.

Many live-ops events, particularly during festive seasons, are arranged to offer generous discounts and rewards to fresh and returning users alike. Tournaments like Champions Cup and Alliance World Cup (analogous to Clan Wars in Clash of Clans) are orchestrated to engage users on different, quantifiable levels.

Reception[edit]

Hitwicket opened up to a warm but breezy response when it was first released in 2015. The game later gained traction gradually and attained peak popularity during 2017-18, especially in the Indian subcontinent[9], with many active users residing in the UK and Australia too. While Hitwicket was applauded for its innovative match-making system and novel approach to Cricket-based strategy gaming, it received flak for recurring bugs, which at times led to many game-breaking issues. As of recent, the game has also received criticism for irregular updates.

However, the game still maintains a loyal, active fan-base that ensures offline and online conversation. In 2019, Hitwicket Cricket Games released a second title - Hitwicket Superstars which racked up 130,000 downloads within 48 hours of release[10]. Although still in its beta stage, Superstars was praised for its fresh character design, probability-based shot selection and simplified, innovative game-play.
