Humanium Metal by IM is a global initiative, owned by Individuell Människohjälp [sv] – Swedish Development Partner, which aims to counteract the spread of illegal weapons. It is a supply chain distributing metal from destructed firearms, making it available for commercial production.

History[edit]

In the recent decades it has become obvious that the spread of illegal weapons around the world is a major problem and a cause that undermines the sustainable and democratic development of many countries. That armed violence is a global problem affecting developing countries the most has for a long time been evident for IM and other development organizations.

Humanium Metal by IM was launched in November 2016 in Stockholm in the presence of the founders Peter Brune (IM) and Johan Pihl (the digital agency Great Works). Also the launch was attended by several Humanium Metal ambassadors, including former IAEA manager Hans Blix and former Minister of Defense Karin Enström. Among Humanium Metal's ambassadors are also Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. The UN has also endorsed and recognized Humanium Metal as the most valuable metal on earth.[1].

Objective[edit]

Humanium Metal aims to increase the socio-economic and political security for people living in areas affected by high levels of violence. It inspires consumers, businesses and authorities to join hands to create a solution to one of the world's greatest problems. Humanium Metal is part of IM Swedish Development Partner's strategy to help fulfil United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.

Activities[edit]

Business model[edit]

IM has spent more than two years establishing a supply chain for Humanium Metal that meets industry standards, as well as developing close ties with governments and local NGOs in countries affected by armed violence. Humanium Metal is sold to companies who use it in the manufacturing of their products where the revenue from the sale is invested in combating weapons-related violence in developing countries. IM is supporting the work at community level and on national policy levels[2] to raise awareness and advocate toward the issue of fire arms.

Humanium Metal as a product[edit]

Humanium Metal is delivered in powder form (AM) and alloy is 316l, the powder is quality-assured and guaranteed to consist of melted illegal weapons. The provided raw material can be used by manufacturer in 3D printing, mold, MiM or used by sintering.
