Hyperplay RPG

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

HyperPlay RPG is a print-only video game magazine based in the UK (but available worldwide) that started life as a homemade fanzine in 2015.

Inspiration[edit]

HyperPlay RPG is inspired by 1990s games magazines (like Super Play, Mean Machines, GameFan, Nintendo Power) and fanzines (like Role Call, Shining Forth, Journey's End and Retrogamer).[1]

Origins[edit]

HyperPlay RPG began as a black-and-white publication to evoke a retro feel, because most of its content features role-playing games from the 1990s onwards.[2] The magazine went full-colour for the first time with the release of Issue 3, a PlayStation special.[3]

Content[edit]

HyperPlay RPG's stated intention is to provided all-new writing and the best video game fan art from around the world.[4] Cover pieces have so far been provided by Wil Overton and Anna Vuong.[5] According to the website's Testimonials page, the content of the magazine has been well-received by readers.[6]

Content from HyperPlay RPG was featured in issue 65 of UK newsstand magazine MyM in the form of an article on classic JRPG Xenogears.[7]

Team[edit]

The team behind HyperPlay RPG are led by Editor Kincl, who has stated that the magazine now has over 1,000 readers, some of whom, like Julian Hill, have contributed reviews to the magazine.[8]

Reception[edit]

HyperPlay RPG has been received positively.[9][10][11] The most recent review of HyperPlay RPG by Nintendo Life (the world's biggest independent Nintendo website in terms of traffic and followers[12]) is indicative of the magazine's reception.[13] Popular YouTube personality Johnny Millennium (aka Happy Console Gamer) has also reviewed HyperPlay RPG positively.[14] HyperPlay RPG magazine was also featured in Issue 48 of Super Play magazine (given away free with Retro Gamer magazine #172), and described as "a proper fanzine".[15][16] UK newsstand magazine MyM recommended HyperPlay RPG in issue 63's "My Goodies" section.[17]

Criticism of the magazine (by online commentators who have not seen a hard copy) has focused on early issues only being around 40 pages long, black-and-white, and nearly the same price as newsstand magazines. Issue 48 of Super Play magazine stated in their review that better production values could probably be found online.[18] This is due to a lack of adverts and trying to keep printing/postage costs down; each page being full of new content with very few spaces or gaps; and the magazine improving all the time[19][20]: Issue 4 of HyperPlay RPG, a MOTHER series special, saw the magazine expand to 52 full-colour pages, with a professional layout and gloss-laminated cover - and these improved production values were very well-received by readers.[21][22][23] [24]
