INSA : Indonesian National Shipowner's Association

The Indonesian National Shipowners' Association or INSA INSA was officially established by Indonesian Shipping Entrepreneurs, with members of private national and state-owned shipping companies on August 9, 1967 and Government recognized INSA as the only shipping organization that represented national shipping company (Minister of Maritime Decree No. DP .10/7/9). Maritime Minister Decree No. DP.10 / 7/9 dated 6 September 1967.

Then INSA was reinforced by the government through Decree of the Minister of Transportation No. KP.8 / AL.308 / Phb / 89 dated October 28, 1989 and Instruction of the Director General of Sea Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation No. Al.58 / 1 / 2-90 dated January 30, 1990 for all national merchant Shipping Companies to become INSA members.

History recorded that the INSA organization is an unification of a number of similar shipping organizations (OPS) established since the independent of Indonesia. In various literatures, it is noted that a number of private shipping business organizations have well established and finally merging into the INSA organization. In 1953, a number of national private shipping companies agreed to establish an organization called UPPI (Unie Perusahaan Pelayaran Indonesia). The private companies are PT Perindo (Manado), PT Pemal (Ambon), PT PPSS (Makassar), PT Perpelin (Surabaya), PT MPN (Jakarta), PT Sang Saka (Jakarta), PT Karimata (Pontianak) and PT Kalimantan ( Banjarmasin). In 1953, the Indonesian Ship Unity Association (Kontepsi) consisting of several national shipping companies, PT Pepana, PT Bintang Maluku, PT Indonesia Fortune Lloyd, PT MPS, PT Pedjaka and PT Nagah Berlian.

In 1962, formed a Seller Enterprise Organization (OPS) of Trade Shipping which consists of shipping companies in Indonesia which combines UPPI and PERPEPSI organization Chairman of H. Moh. Saad (1962-1967). After five years, precisely in 1967, the OPS of Commerce Shipping was transformed into National Sailing Union (Pelnas) with the Chairman of H. Moh. Saad (1967-1970) and members consist of private national shipping entrepreneurs. In 1967, members of Pelnas and shipping companies that are federatively established INSA with the Chairman of Capt. MJP Hahijari (1967-1970). Then, at the direction of the Government c.q of the Directorate General of Sea Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation, in 1970 INSA and Pelnas merged into INSA which is unitaristically up to the present time

Since becoming the only national trade shipping organization to date, INSA has been conducting the election of the chairman. H. Soedarpo Sastrosatomo was Chairman of the INSA period 1970-1972 and served again for the period 1974-1975. Then, H. Sally Moejono served as Chairman of the period 1972-1975 although in 1974, was replaced care taker Capt. Harun Rasidi who later elected Chairman in the period 1975-1978.

During the three periods (1978-1981, 1981-2984 and 1984-1987) INSA was led by Budihardjo Sastrohadiwirjo who was elected in three succession. Then Hartoto Hardikusumo also elected and managed as a chairman for three successive periods of the period 1987-1991, 1991-1994 and 1994-1997, but in December 1994, Hartoto died and was replaced by care taker Drs H. Firdaus Wadjdi who was later elected to be Chairman of INSA in the period 1998-2002.

In RUA 2002, Drs Baren TH. Saragih was elected Chairman of INSA for the period of 2002-2005. Due to his death, Oentoro Surya replaced him as a care taker. Oentoro Surya was finally elected as Chairman in the period 2005-2008. In 2008-2011, INSA was led by Johnson W. Sutjipto and in 2011-2015, for the first time in the history of INSA, Chairman of INSA was led by a woman Carmelita Hartoto and also the son of former INSA Chairman H. Hartoto Hardikusomo.

On 20-21 August 2015, INSA held a General Meeting of Members (RUA) to elect the Chairman of INSA period 2015-2019. In the election process, Johnson W. Sutjipto, Chairman of INSA 2008-2011 period won 386 votes, while Carmelita Hartoto, Chairman of INSA 2011-2015 period reached 363 members.

Johnson was finally ratified as General Chairman based on the Decision Letter of Care Taker Central Board of Indonesian National Shipowners' Association (INSA) no. CTRXVI-110915-025 dated September 11, 2015 on the Establishment and Ratification of the Chairman of INSA period 2015-2019.

Based on the Articles of Association (AD) the purpose of INSA is to help realize the sovereignty of the territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia and the economic sovereignty of the nation through the empowerment of national shipping business activities of Indonesia and improve the efforts of its members.

In its journey, INSA has a role to represent Indonesia in the field of shipping in various activities, both in the national, regional and international arena. INSA is recorded as one of the initiators for the formation of the ASEAN shipping organization or FASA (Federation of Asean Shipowners' Association), even INSA hosted the first meeting of FASA.INSA was also listed as member of Asian Shipowners Forum (ASF). From January 2010 to December 2011, Chairman of INSA is Chairman of FASA and concurrently Chairman of ASF in May 2010-May 2011 period and for the first time, INSA hosted .pdf Annual General Meeting [http://asianshipowners.org/ ASF <nowiki> </ nowiki> held in Bali on 23-25 May 2011. INSA has vision as infrastructure of economic builder, unifying tool of unity and national unity and country. While INSA's mission is to empower the national trade shipping, to unite, protect, fight for the interests of the members of the organization and to direct the ability to reach common goals, to be the master of their own country.
