Following three years as Chair of Plants at Work[4] (formerly EFig), an association created to promote the use and benefits of interior plants, in 2016 Ian was invited to become an Ambassador, a position he still holds.

RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW[edit]

In his role as Creative Director of Indoor Garden Design, Ian has designed award-winning installations at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. In 2010 he created a 'Living Office', an open air office showcasing plants in the workplace[5] (awarded Silver-Gilt), and in 2013 he designed 'Living Workspace' where visitors to the show were asked to take place in a study to determine the benefits of plants in the workplace [6] (awarded Bronze). In 2015, ‘Afternoon Tea’ an installation created in partnership with St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, received Gold and Best in Show Medals for Hotel Floristry.

In 2017, Ian and IKEA co-created ‘At Home with Plants’[7] a three-roomed installation within the Great Pavilion, comprising living room, bedroom and bathroom, celebrating the beauty of horticulture in the home, which was awarded a Silver Medal.

The partnership continued in 2018 with 'Plants Work'[8], a home office installation, which was awarded a Silver-Gilt Medal.

NOTABLE PLANTING SCHEMES[edit]

In his role as Creative Director, Ian has designed notable installations including Sir Elton John AIDS Foundation Ball, comprising a 4 metre tall Grey Goose Vodka bottle made from lavender and rosemary, along with a life-size Cadillac, planted with moss, kalenchoe and hydrangea ; creative planting for London Fashion Week, and five star hotels such as The Connaught. In 2013, he was invited to stage a solo exhibition at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and St Pancras International Station – ‘Living with Nature’, an exploration of the interaction between humans and nature, told through the medium of plants.

Ian has also created two installations for Chelsea Fringe. In 2018, alongside landscape designer Claudia de Yong, he created 'Geraniums at the Door'[9] at the entrance of the Zetter Townhouse in Clerkenwell. In 2016 and as part of the 90th birthday celebrations for HM The Queen, Ian devised a planting scheme to turn the exterior of The Connaught hotel, a patriotic red, white and blue.
