Inanimate Alice: Perpetual Nomads is a YA-oriented Virtual Reality Adventure created in the Inanimate Alice storyworld[1][2] and is a co-production between Mez Breeze Design (Australia) and the BradField Narrative Designs (Canada) with investment from Canada Media Fund[3] and Screen Australia.[4][5] The game had an Early Access Release for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift on March 14, 2018.

The player takes the role Alice Field (Inanimate Alice) as she gets stuck in the desert after her autobus breaks down. Each level of the game is represented by a different location (i.e. the autobus, the desert, an empty building). During these levels, Alice encounters obstacles as she tries to charge her phone to get help. The player must search for an outlet and work with her friends via texting on her phone to fix the autobus and get back on her way.

Plot[edit]

Alice Field (Inanimate Alice) is in a Virtual Reality Adventure that spans the gap between Episodes Six: The Last Gas Station and Seven of the award-winning Inanimate Alice series[6]. Alice is stuck on a broken down autobus and finds herself alone in the middle of the desert with a rapidly dying phone battery. Gameplay has Alice looking for someone she can trust to help her charge her phone, fix the autoBus, and get her on her way back home.

Interactivity[edit]

The story takes place in a virtual reality environment where the user is engaging from a first-person perspective, with interaction based around this. Players move by hovering over a designated marker. Players also interact with items in the environment, such as buttons on the elevator and sending and receiving texts on Alice's mobile device.

Development[edit]

This VR Experience reflects the essence of the entire Inanimate Alice franchise which involves how the main protagonist Alice strives to remain upbeat in the face of a world filled with global upheaval, digital communication challenges and geographic displacement.

Awards[edit]

  • 2017 - Finalist in the QUT Digital Literature Award (Beta version), which is part of the 2017 Queensland Literary Awards (Beta version). The judges described the Beta version of the work, an interactive novella titled “Sand + Smudges”, as: “A wonderful new iteration of the long-running Inanimate Alice series. Mez [Breeze] bring her own voice to the character of Alice and the integration of sound, image, and animation with text brings the project up to date.”[7][8]
  • 2017 - Honorable Mention, the Turn On Literature Prize which showcases selected works of electronic literature, which they define as “…works with important literary aspects that take advantage of the capabilities and contexts provided by a stand-alone or networked computer.”[9]
  • 2017 - Shortlisted in the Opening Up Digital Fiction Writing Competition (Beta Version), an award which is run by Sheffield Hallam University and Bangor University and is the first ever UK competition to find the best new examples of popular Digital Fiction, and part of the AHRC-funded Reading Digital Fiction project.[10]
