Independent Australia is an online publication, founded in 2010 by David Donovan.[1] It is published under a creative commons license, which allows articles to be republished by other publications.[2]
Independent Australia is one of the constituent bodies of the Australian Press Council[3] and the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery,[4] where it has been represented by Martin Hirst[5] and John Passant.[6]
Independent Australia investigated the controversy surrounding the former Speaker of the House of Representatives Peter Slipper and staffer James Ashby, known as "Ashbygate".[7][8][9] This reportage led to the publication of a book Ashbygate: The Plot to Destroy Australia's Speaker.[10]
Independent Australia also published a series of articles investigating the Health Services Union expenses affair, involving former Labor MP Craig Thomson and Health Services Union boss Kathy Jackson, known as "Jacksonville".[11]
