The Indian Institute of Journalism & New Media (IIJNM) is a post-graduate school of journalism and media. It was founded in 2001 by the BS&G Foundation, a collaboration between The George Foundation and Adi Chunchangiri Maha Samasthana. Located in Bangalore, India, the institute offers an excellent curriculum that combines both theory and practice to prepare its graduates for positions in the media industry. The dean of the college is Kanchan Kaur.

IIJNM offers a curriculum developed in association with Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, New York. It offers programs in print, television, and multimedia journalism.[1] The program, leading to a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Journalism, allows the student to choose their specialization of choice and builds on their background in arts, humanities, the sciences, and other disciplines of study. IIJNM has been ranked in the top journalism colleges in the country consistently over the last 10 years by multiple independent surveys.[2]

IIJNM is an independent institution not affiliated with or run by anyone newspaper or media organization. IIJNM offers its students placement assistance.

Campus[edit]

The large campus is set in the rolling hills of Kumbalgudu on the outskirts of the city. The 5-acre facility has large classrooms, auditoriums, a media lab, and a library where each student is given their own personal computer. The campus also features basketball and volleyball courts in addition to a dedicated hostel and cafeteria. IIJNM is situated 45 minutes from the heart of Bangalore city and is close to the Kengeri Metro Terminal.

Academics[edit]

Both theoretical and practical training is given by faculty from around the world who have been or still are working journalists. Students gain journalistic skills through a blend of theoretical and practical courses and workshops.

The curriculum offers an array of elective courses from which students may choose to custom-design a program consistent with their areas of interest.

Whether it is newspaper or magazine journalism, students learn reporting, editing, page design and newsroom management. Students use industry-standard software to produce newspapers and magazines on a weekly basis.

Through the Broadcast Journalism program, students learn reporting, writing and editing broadcast news and feature stories. They learn the skills to shoot and record interviews, plan and execute news stories, and anchor bulletins and programs, and they will also get an insight into the nuances of editing and news presentation.

In the Multimedia stream, students learn reporting skills along with the technical skills needed for presenting news online. This “Convergence” programme combines print and broadcast online with texts and images that are updated frequently. Students create their multimedia websites and do everything from gathering and writing content to publishing their work. Web-publishing software is used to design, create and operate web publications as part of the course work. Lectures, seminars with guest speakers, individual assignments and workshops form part of the pedagogy for all the streams.

Admission[edit]

Admission to IIJNM is a three-step process that involves completing and submitting the application form available on their website. This is followed by an online test and a personal interview.
