History[edit]
The institution was formerly known as National Ship Design And Research Centre (NSDRC). Established in 1992 by the Indian Government as a research centre. Back then, the Government of India had accepted the need to set up an indigenous Central Marine Design and Research Organisation (CMDRO) and thus NSDRC was founded by virtue of the same with the help of the Netherlands's Government. In the starting years, newly recruited officers were trained at the Netherlands. . NSDRC worked as an autonomous body under the ministry of shipping to provide the following services to the Indian shipping and ship building industry:
- Ship design
- Applied research in hydrodynamics, structures, noise and vibrations
- Advice in ocean/water transport economy, vessel purchase, maritime contracting etc.
- Developing a documentation-cum-data centre and library facilities for use by shipping and shipbuilding and allied industries
- Advice to shipyards on manning and improving productivity and quality
The centre has handled many maritime projects. Its Electronics & Telecom division, which was engaged in customized product development, design and development of hardware and embedded software in telecom, shipping and multimedia sectors, has developed several products including Automatic Vehicle Monitoring System, Wireless Optical System, Currency Counting and Fake Note Detection System (CCDS), Broadband Fixed Wireless System and Currency Authentication and System Hardware. The R&D branch provides services in the domain of High Speed Crafts, Ship Mooring Systems, Noise and Vibration Studies and Accident analysis. Later, in 2008 under the Parliamentary act known as the Indian Maritime University Act, NSDRC merged into the newly formed Indian Maritime University along with six other premier institutions in the maritime sector in the country. Since then, NSDRC has been renamed as Indian Maritime University Vishakhapatnam Campus and serves as an educational institution in the maritime field along with R&D works.
The focus now has shifted towards educational programmes.
