Indiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Indiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council (abbreviated to ILYAC) is a youth council composed of up to 22 members aged 16 to 22, with the purpose of advising the Indiana General Assembly on issues related to youth in the State of Indiana.[1] The group is responsible for submitting at least one annual report to the Indiana General Assembly, the contents of which include issues pertaining to youth across Indiana.[2]The Council currently sponsored by the Indiana Bar Foundation,[3] although in previous years it was sponsored by the Indiana Department of Education.

Members of the council are chosen through an appointment process from a ranking state representative or executive office (the Governor and Lt. Governor, respectively). Meetings are held up to six times each year in Indianapolis, and council members receive excused absences from school along with a stipend to off-set any transportation costs.[4]

History[edit]

The idea of youth councils popularized in the late 2000s.[5] The Indiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council, in particular, was created in 2009 under a resolution by that year's Indiana General Assembly. [1] A study by the National Council for State Legislatures (NCSL) that same year found functioning youth councils in 11 other states[6], including the State of Washington and it's youth legislative advisory council.
