The Information Privacy manager or simply Privacy Manager is a role within an organization which has as its main task the maintenance of the Privacy Program. This role usually is present also in organizations which do not have a Data Protection Officer, although this role might be one of its direct report.[1]

This professional figure would be part of the council of privacy representatives inside the organization and would be embedded in certain key functional groups as a point of contact with the council.[2]

One of the main activities for this role would be to respond to data subject access requests, as well as to engage in a wide range of activities aimed at supporting the organization's privacy program. This would include the design and implementation of policies, controls, privacy-related processes and leading practices, in consultation with the organization's legal office and the Information Security Department. Full life cycle management of initiatives foundational and essential to building and maintaining the organization's Privacy Program will be within the management scope of the Information Privacy Manager .

The holder of this role would work with other functional groups to facilitate the definition of scope, goals and deliverables for projects touching privacy matters. This would include the analysis, advising and driving of the implementation of privacy controls, monitor and report on the ongoing initiatives of the privacy program. In some occasion this role has become very prominent as it impacts deeply company's privacy policies and politics of big corporations.[3]

The role would also: Provide ongoing direction and support for the privacy training program, including development and delivery of content for privacy training; Coordinate and chair periodic meetings with privacy council members to communicate effectively about privacy issues and requirements; Assist and advise relevant management in privacy topics, including developing and adopting privacy controls for applications processing personal data and in assisting Information Security on privacy-related incident response.[4]

Although very often seen as a very 'political' role[5], in reality the individuals selected for this role would need to have (Privacy) Program Management experience, excellent organizational skills, a strong technical aptitude coupled with understanding of security-related strategies and international/multi-cultural experience, including foreign language skills. An important factor is a relevant background in privacy laws, gained either from University (Faculty of Law) or through specific industry-certifications, such as International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP)'s gold-standard CIPP and/or CIPM and Data Privacy Certification. Given the rising attention of the media, lately other organizations in Europe are starting to offer DPO training and GDPR courses.[6] [7] [8] It expected that by 2020 there will be more than 15,000 jobs related to Privacy in the European Union.
