From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Institute of Cognitive Science (ICS) is a not-for-profit multidisciplinary research organization conducting research and training in human cognition, learning, and development as a unit of the University of Colorado Boulder’s Graduate School program....[1]. ICS and the University of Colorado is located in the city of Boulder, in the state of Colorado in the United States of America.

About/Mission[edit]

According to the Institute of Cognitive Science (ICS) website the mission of ICS at CU-Boulder is "To understand and enhance human cognition, learning, and development through the creation of interdisciplinary partnerships."[2]

ICS operates in partnership with researchers from a range of disciplines including Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, Philosophy, and Education and is involved in research, education, and outreach activities.”[2]

Personnel at ICS includes ICS Faculty, affiliated professors called Fellows, research associates, graduate students, emeriti faculty and administrative staff[3]

ICS operates predominantly on grant and donation funding[4] to conduct its research[5], maintain facilities[6], and deliver events and activities[7]

University units currently collaborating with ICS include the departments of Psychology and Neuroscience; Philosophy; Linguistics; Computer Science; Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences; Integrative Physiology; Information Science; Architecture and Planning, and the School of Education[8]

Research[edit]

ICS houses three research centers, the Center for Research on Training (CRT).[9] , the Intermountain Neuroimaging Consortium (INC) [10], and CU Center for Research and Education Addressing Cannabinoids and Health (CU REACH)[11]. In addition, ICS houses individual ICS faculty member research laboratories[5]

Education[edit]

Graduate and undergraduate students from a department affiliated with ICS can earn certificates and combined-degrees. [12][13]. In addition students from other departments can also apply for certificates and combined-degrees with ICS[14].

Undergraduate students at the University of Colorado Boulder can earn a Certificate in Cognitive Science.[12] . Graduate students can earn a Certificate in Cognitive Science, Certificate in Human Language Technology as well as enroll in a Cognitive Science Combined-PhD program and Cognitive Neuroscience Combined PhD program[13]

Facility[edit]

ICS occupies two locationsf or its, administrative offices, work spaces, and research laboratories. The research offices, work spaces and laboratories are located in the Center for Innovation and Creativity (CINC) on the East campus of CU Boulder[15] .The administrative offices are located on the main campus on the fourth floor in the Muenzinger building[16] . The CINC facility has over 16,000 square feet of faculty and student offices and experimental laboratories, meeting spaces, and equipment rooms[6] . The CINC facility also holds a Siemens Tim Trio 3 Tesla 12- and 32-channel head coils neuroimaging Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) brain scanner[6]

History[edit]

The current Institute of Cognitive Science began at CU Boulder in 1968 with the founding of the Institute for the Study of Intellectual Behavior, ISIB.[17]. ISIB was formed by several psychology faculty who were following the new trend of cognitive psychology[18]. Bill Battig was its long-time Director[14] . Late in 1979, a group of cognitive psychologists including Don Norman, James Greeno and CU Boulder’s Walter Kintsch met and the result of that gathering was the charge to form the Cognitive Science Society[19] Around 1982 ISIB evolved into the Institute of Cognitive Science with Lyle Bourne as Director[20], immediately followed by the long tenure of Professor Walter Kintsch who remained the Director until 2005[21]. In the ensuing years, ICS expanded to include scholars from several different departments who were interested in interdisciplinary research in the cognitive sciences. The initial participating departments in addition to psychology were computer science, linguistics, philosophy, and the School of Education[14]

The Institute became the first institute or department in any higher education institution in Colorado to offer a combined Ph.D. in Cognitive Science with one of the participating departments[22]. In recent years more departments have been added to include Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, Architectural Planning, Integrative Physiology, and Information Science[23]. The ICS program has served as a model for several other interdisciplinary combined Ph.D. programs at the University of Colorado Boulder [24]. In 2005 under the leadership of Marie Banich as Director, ICS expanded to include Cognitive Neuroscience and hosts the Rocky Mountain region’s first and premiere state of the art neuroimaging facility[10]. Since 2016 Professor Tamara Sumner has served as the Director [25]
