InterNations is an online networking platform, where expatriates across the world can network and meet one another in person during events and/or activities organized by, primarily the Ambassadors and Consuls. As of January 2023, each available city with InterNations (i.e. Los Angeles, London, Abu Dhabi, Chennai, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hongkong, Taipei, Seoul, Tokyo etc.) has about 80-100 active members on average. InterNations has stated that they have more than four million registered members across the globe.

In the early days of InterNations since its founding in 2007, memberships have to be approved by the head office in Munich, Germany. This was to ensure the quality of the expatriate network, where members being asked for their socio-economic information such as annual income and educational qualifications. InterNations later allowed members to invite trusted individuals to join the expats social network, subject to approval by InterNations.

Subsequently, by early 2010s, the expatriate networking platform transited into a tier membership system, where Basic members can register for a complimentary membership, while Albatross members (via paid membership) can enjoy free entry or lowest entrance fees in attending the official InterNations events lead by Ambassador. Also, up to 85% of the official InterNations events' profits went straight to InterNations head office then. Only Albatross members are able to attend and/or view the relevant details of InterNations group activities or events.

There are also some significant issues affecting InterNations, especially after the transition to tier membership system i.e. unsolicited advances and/or suggestive messages from some members across the globe. This has lead to undesired behaviour displayed by some members, both of in-person during group activities/official InterNations events and messaging via the InterNations platform. Since then, InterNations has published Community Guidelines and Safety Tips to counter these issues, with questionable behaviours being reported to InterNations occasionally. InterNations however is taking a firm stance where members will report to InterNations immediately and/or resolve such issues independently with some levels of discretion.
